Soul healing

Nothing required stitches.  There was no demon to exorcise.  No skin disease had made their lives miserable.

The two who were traveling that road to Emmaus on Easter afternoon were simply grieving.  They grieved the loss of their friend, Jesus; the loss of their hope, that he would be the Messiah; and the loss of the future they had imagined.  Their bodies were not in need of healing; their souls were.

So Jesus walked along with them in their grief, showing them a path through God's Word which would bring them to a very different destination.  He accepted their invitation to stay with them and share the evening meal.  He broke the bread and was revealed as quickly as he vanished. "Were not our hearts burning within us...?"

When they most needed God present to them, Jesus walked alongside them down the road.  He spoke God's story, then he joined them at the table to share a meal of bread and probably wine.  He healed their souls.

Perhaps this is a good model for us: when trudging along on a barren road: seek wisdom in God's Word and sustenance in the meal of bread and wine and allow Jesus to reveal himself to you and heal your aching soul.
